Meet Our 4-H Scholarship Recipient – Owen Backus
4-H Scholarship
Every year, Kosciusko REMC awards ten $350 scholarships to members who participate in 4-H to go towards their 4-H projects. Concern for Community is one of KREMC’s core principles, and investing in our local youth is one way we do this every year. 4-H programs have been shown to build skills such as leadership, communication, community engagement, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills as well as fostering a sense of belonging and connection. Read on to see how our 4-H Scholarship has benefited scholarship recipient, Owen Backus.
What is your name, what school do you go to, and what grade are you in?
My name is Owen Backus and I am a 6th grader at Tippecanoe Valley Middle School.
How many years have you been participating in 4-H?
I have completed 3 years of 4-H and I'm a member of the Henry Hardy Farmers 4-H club.
Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and your experience in 4-H?
I enjoy playing football, basketball, baseball, and soccer. I also like to hunt and fish. I have been involved with Electric, Farm Toy Scene, and Swine in 4-H. I really enjoy working with my swine and forming a bond with each of my animals.
How did you hear about our scholarship program?
I heard about the KREMC 4-H scholarship program through the monthly newsletter and through the KREMC website.
How did receiving this scholarship make a difference for your 4-H project?
I was able to show 5 pigs this year at the Fulton County Fair. The 4-H scholarship program helped me with some of the feed costs for my pigs.
What did you learn through your 4-H project?
I have learned time management from being in the 4-H project. Swine is a big commitment and without time management, I wouldn't be able to do other things that I enjoy.
