Meet our John H. Anglin Scholarship Recipient – Lucy Ray

Concern for Community is one of KREMC’s core principles, and investing in the youth in our community is one way we show this. The John H. Anglin Scholarship is a $1,000 scholarship awarded to 10 applicants to go towards an intuition of higher education of the student’s choice. Read on to meet one of the brilliant students who received this scholarship.

Can you introduce yourself and where you are attending school?

My name is Lucy Ray, and I am a freshman at Valparaiso University. I am studying Health Sciences, but I am also a direct admit into Valparaiso University’s Physician Assistant program!

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and your educational journey?

I was born and raised in Warsaw, Indiana, as the youngest of four siblings. Much of my childhood was spent outdoors, especially on the lake with my family. I’ve also found passions that have become a big part of who I am—playing tennis and pickleball, volunteering at Our Father’s Pantry, and staying active in my parish, Sacred Heart Catholic Church, where I love sharing and growing in my faith.

Educationally, I feel fortunate to have grown up in Warsaw, where I had access to excellent schools and the opportunity to explore classes that fueled my interests. It was through these experiences that I developed a strong love for science and medicine. I always knew I wanted a career in healthcare, but I wasn’t sure at first if I wanted to become a nurse or a doctor. When I learned about Physician Assistants, I realized it was exactly what I was looking for. It combined my passion for helping others with the flexibility and balance I wanted for my future.

When I found out that Valparaiso University had a direct admission to their Physician Assistant school, I decided to go visit campus and do more research on the school. From the moment I stepped on campus, I felt at home. I fell in love with the welcoming environment and supportive community, and since then, I’ve been able to thrive academically, personally, and spiritually.

How did you hear about our scholarship program?

I first heard about this scholarship through family and friends who had applied in the past. They spoke very highly of the opportunities it provided them and encouraged me to apply, and I am so grateful that I did!

How did receiving this scholarship make a difference in your educational path?

Receiving this scholarship has made a tremendous difference in my educational journey. It has allowed me to fully focus on my studies and involvement on campus without the constant stress of financial barriers. Because of this support, I’ve been able to dedicate more time to my academics, volunteer work, and growing in leadership opportunities that will prepare me for a career as a Physician Assistant.

What are some key things you have learned or achieved during your time as a student?

As a student, I’ve learned the importance of balance, perseverance, and community. I’ve grown academically in my love for science and medicine while also staying active in volunteering, athletics, and my church. These experiences have strengthened my leadership skills, deepened my sense of service, and built the confidence I need to pursue my career goal.

How did it feel to be selected as a scholarship recipient?

Being selected as a scholarship recipient was both humbling and motivating. I felt incredibly grateful to have others that believe in me and are willing to invest in my future. It has inspired me to continue striving toward my goals while also finding ways to give back to others.

What advice would you give to someone thinking about applying for the scholarship next year?

My advice to anyone thinking about applying is to absolutely go for it! An application can be intimidating, but your hard work does pay off! This scholarship opens so many opportunities while supporting you through your first year of college! Taking the time to apply is so worth it and you never know how much it could impact your future.

What are your career goals looking forward?

Looking ahead, I would like to become a Physician Assistant with a focus on compassion and positivity. I hope to work in a clinical setting where I can build strong relationships with patients, provide high-quality care, and continue learning throughout my career. I’m especially interested in working in women’s health or family medicine, where I can support patients and their families through all of the stages of life. Ultimately, I want to use my education and experiences to serve others and give back to my community, just as others have supported me.
